Growing up in the eastern frontiers of India, I didn't have access to numerous museums or galleries, but the rich culture and traditions of my birthplace profoundly shaped my design sensibility. Being born and raised in Kolkata, the festival of Durga Puja was a time of great excitement and anticipation. During September and October, the city transforms with lights, music, dance, street food, and intricately designed pandals (temporary temple-like structures) that celebrate the festival.
These pandals are masterpieces of creativity, featuring exquisite themes, artistic direction, local crafts, and folk art forms, with sholapith craft playing a significant role. As a child, visiting these pandals each year offered my first exposure to art, craft, and design. These memories bring me immense joy and a deep sense of nostalgia for my home.
This collection is an ode to Durga Puja and the craft of sholapith. The pieces capture the festival's essence, utilizing techniques inspired by shola craft. They honor the skill, finesse, and artistry of the craftsmen, striving to evoke a feeling of belonging and joy in the wearer, while showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship that defines the cultural heritage of Kolkata.
